Actually they were not. At the beginning everybody though that they will never succeed, they debut song MAMA was not that popular, only in 2013 after Growl they were recognizing.

Exols really are the best fandom. These boys went from 12 to 9 to 8 to 6 and now the leader is enlisting making them 5. We’ve had to watch our boys be mistreated by their company, watch antis attack literally every member and them asking chen to leave, other fandoms saying exo is only famous because they debuted in sm, i could go on. We’ve stuck with them and we will continue to support them and we will wait for them. Exols have the strongest heart and no matter what others say, *WE ARE THE BEST FANDOM IN KPOP*

[STORY OF HOW I BECAME A FETUS EXOL] it was 2012 when my older sis influenced me to EXO. I was just asking her to bluetooth me some music videos like taylor swift's songs or western chuchu...but when it was over, i saw EXO mvs and i dont even know these kings but when we are playing WOLF and GROWL, i am dancing the choreo and just jamming to it and the moment has come when i started streaming and voting [with my sis ofc] but i started voting on MAMA and not usually active. I just become a fan of EXO this year and I can really say that this was their biggest hit as a group. If this group still remain as a 12 member group, no other boy group can surpass them. Sorry I'm not into boy groups, but EXO is totally a complete package. I most likely to listen on its Chinese Version, but I went here to say that EXO become the first boy group that I really like.
