the symbolism in this MV is crazy - Wendy in the corridor with Seulgi looking through the keyhole representing the lives that were trapped in the ferry - Seulgi walking out of the corridor and being parralel with the water because the ferry tipped before sinking - the ladder joy is on with the water below her - the tea because students said they were eating soup and noticed the soup was tilted - the unknowing of which way is up vs down - the way the girls are sitting around a table with one another because the survivors said the last thing they did before the panic was eating lunch with their friends - the lights turning off as seulgi walks back into the corridor and the most poignant symbolism is regarding yeri 1. the cover of the velvet album has yeri's face blurred because she was the same age as the students in the sewol ferry disaster 2. yeri being in a boat lying down 3. the boat being filled with water as yeri seems to be asleep most of the people on the ferry were school aged kids the same age as yeri and i think the use of yeri to display the disaster makes it even more emotional

I was doubtful about this song being about the Sewol sinking, but after reading a few articles on it, I can't help but wonder if that is true. 0:00 - Despite being dolled up and made to look gorgeous, the girls all have the same, sad look on their face. 0:06 - A yellow butterfly is seen behind Yeri, symbolizing hope. Yellow is also the color of the ribbon used for the Sewol disaster. 0:20 - A sign on the bulletin board says "AIS on 15-16." The AIS (a maritime emergency/distress signal) of the Sewol ferry was deactivated on either April 15 or 16. 0:22 - The interior of the set is much more similar to that of a boat corridor rather than a motel. 0:28 - Seulgi is peering into the keyhole of the door, symbolizing how she realizes the boat is sinking. She then faces the camera and perches herself on the balcony that is already beginning to flood with water. 0:43 - Irene, facing a porthole like mirror or window, stays still, as the passengers of the ferry were told to remain where they were as the boat sank. 0:51 - Joy, the sole survivor here, sadly looks at Irene, knowing she cannot help her. 0:58 - Joy is seen climbing the ladder and therefore escaping the waters below her. 1:05 - The image of Joy is disturbed by a cup of tea. The passengers were drinking tea at the time of the sinking and noticed the tea was tilted. This was the first sign that something was wrong for them. 1:12 - Seulgi attempts to escape with Wendy by opening a window, but she sees that it is already too late for Wendy. She is soaked in water, signifying her drowning. They cry together. 1:32 - In likely the most obvious sign in the music video, we see Yeri sound asleep in a boat that is rapidly flooding. She is roughly the same age as the students who passed away in the disaster, and showing her death symbolizes the loss of these children. 1:45 - A white light (heaven) swallows up the other girls, dressed in white (angels), as Joy fades away from them as she is the only survivor. At this time, the lyrics sung are "Let's meet again," further supporting the idea that the rest of the girls died while Joy lived. 2:03 - Seulgi, who has realized the severity of the disaster, had the chance to escape as well. But as the halls of the ship flood, she accepts her imminent death and opens the door to Heaven, where the other members (excluding Joy) welcome her in white robes. 2:41 - Wendy crawls under a table, which many of the trapped passengers did as the ship began to sink. 2:49 - The girls are surrounded by candles, in potentially a fantasy where they can all be together again. The candles represent honoring the dead, and Joy's yellow dress indicates hope once again. 2:58 - Irene is face to face with the water, as it slowly begins to drown her. The furniture is somewhat tilted, symbolizing the tilt of the ship as it sank. 3:07 - Yeri finally wakes up, but by now it is too late. The boat has flooded and she is staring at the sea, accepting her fate. 3:21 - Yeri succumbs to the waters and passes away. 3:38 - The porthole breaks open and floods with water, drowning Irene. 3:44 - Joy appears in black now, to show respect for the deceased. 3:51 - Another example of the posthumous fantasy with Red Velvet reunited. 3:58 - Irene is on the ground, surrounded by blue walls, representing her body trapped in the ship. You can see furniture floating above her, as if they are floating in the water. 4:02 - A member walks down the hall as the lights go out one by one, which can symbolize either the power going out as the ship sank and/or the lives lost in the disaster. And finally, the most compelling detail of all, this video was released exactly one month prior to the 2nd anniversary of the disaster. Not only that, you can see a moon behind a cloud multiple times in the MV. This video was released exactly two *lunar* years following the sinking. May all those who passed away in the disaster rest in paradise.

Red Velvet are truly risk takers... Imagine promoting a R&B ballad after 2 years of debuting. Generally it’ll be wiser and better for them to promote more upbeat songs in order to have a stable image of themselves as a group during the earlier years but RV instead choose another way round by not doing what others usually do. hi everyone, I just want you to know that this mv is based off the Sewol accident on April 16th (Korean time), 2014. This ship was carrying 476 people, and most of the people were students from Danwon High School, on their way to Jeju island for an overnight school field trip. The ship sank. Only a few of them survived however, and although there was time to rescue them, they passed away because the captain reminded them to hold still with the life jacket. It is a tragic story and event that everyone should take seriously, and so while you watch the movie, I ask you to please think of them and give them prayers. Some of the evidence that backsup that this mv is about Sewol ferry incident are as follows: 0:02 - 0:18 the students (from Danwon High School) is getting prepared for their field trip, putting on makeup. (Korean students usually all put makeup on before going somewhere like this.) 0:20 - 0:24 in this scene, the setting (where Wendy is) looks like a corridor or a hallway of the ship. Signs such as 'NO SMOKING' can be seen. 0:29 Seulgi sees Wendy trapped inside the ship, but decides to leave her so that she can survive (and rescue herself). 0:37 Seulgi faces the ocean. This scene shows that she is out of the interior of the ship, and the water represents the sea. The ship is sinking rapidly. 0:48 Irene does not know what is going on. Joy sees her, but she decides to rescue herself as well like Seulgi. 0:56 she climbs the ladder to escape from the sinking ship. 1:01 the background, as you can see, is blue water. This represents how the ship is already filled with water. 1:10 Seulgi has stayed, unlike how she decided to leave at the first place. She wanted to stay for her friend, to rescue her friend (wendy). 1:18 However, Wendy has already drowned, (as you can see by the raining in the background). The rain represents water, and how she drowned before Seulgi could rescue her. 1:28 the tear represents sadness and grief. 1:47 The background (which is where every other members are in except for Joy) fades into black. This reveals that all of them passed away, except for Joy who rescued herself. (She is the only one in the light.) 1:54 Now trapped (she was trying to rescue her friend inside the ship, so she did not choose to rescue herself, although she knew what was going on), Seulgi faces her fate (death). The water image in the background, again, represents the sea water inside the ship. 2:10 - 2:28 All of them are in heaven now, and Seulgi as well. 2:49 Candles were used during the Sewol ferry incident as to symbolize last bits of hope. This scene shows candles, and how all members are praying. (Their hands are all held tightly together.) 2:58 and 3:04 Irene dies from the water coming up to her nose. This scene shows how the students in the ship were trying to live by holding their nose to the top of the ship (the ceiling). 3:21 Yeri passes away. The water comes up to her boat. This reveals how the ship has completely sank. 3:28 the water breaks from the glass. This shows how the water is pushing against the window (of the ship), causing it to break and to fill the inside of the ship. Irene falls. 3:43 If you saw, Joy is the only one wearing the black clothing while the other member in the same background (heaven) wore the white gowns. People usually wear black when they go to a funeral. So from this scene, it can be inferred that Joy is the only one who survived. She is mourning for her friends. 3:58 if you see at the top closely, Irene is below and tables and other furnitures are floating. This shows that Irene drowned. And water makes the tables to float. Every April 16th in Korea, Koreans try to remember and take a moment to think about this incident, for the people who have passed away. The most frustrating part is that although there was time to rescue them, false instruction and poor equipment was a major flaw that made these students, in their high school days, to die. I just wanted to mention this because it seems like a lot of people don't know much about it. Please take a moment to think about the students and the victims of this incident.

+12 20 "The real theory is that it is based on Chilseok. This is an old Korean folktale in which the God of Heaven's daughter was a clothes weaver whose father married her off to a cowherder. The two fell immensely in love, so much so that they stopped their work. The girl's father became angry at them both and sent off the boy back to his land and allowed for them to meet only once a year on the 7th of the 7th month (July). The girl would become sad in realising that the Milky Way would have to be crossed for her to meet her husband. She cried so much that magpies built a bridge for her to cross the Milky Way and meet her loved one. If you look at the English lyrics, they say that their lover is 'past the milky way' and that their short meeting (once a year) is so painful for them both that the girl wishes that she sees her lover in her dream 'uri dasi mana' (let's meet again in my dreams, one of these nights). I'm sorry if I was all over the place but if you'd like, you can research it yourselves as this theory is all over the web." -taken from lushaista

It's not about the Sewol ferry. It's about the Korean festival Chilseok. Specifically the folktale about Jiknyeo and Gyeonwu . The song's lyrics are about longing. Its lyrics alone have plenty of references to the story, like the milky way. This MV too. Here, read about it. The references have links to their original articles en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_of_These_Nights_(Red_Velvet_song)
@SGEC2010Y1EC6 жыл бұрын
The lyrics alone is a reference to Chilseok. The music video itself is a reference to the Sewol Ferry.
@bronzenrule6 жыл бұрын
Actually there are clues that both the song and MV are about the Sewol ferry tragedy, and not just about the story of Chilseok: At 4:16 of the MV the Korean title of the song, 7월 7일, appears. 4/16 or April 16th is when the Sewol Ferry tragedy occurred. 7월 7일 is July 7th. July 7th is when f(x)'s album Red Light was released. The lead single of the album, also titled Red Light, is about the Sewol ferry tragedy. www.allkpop.com/article/2015/11/sm-entertainment-producer-states-fxs-red-light-criticizes-sewol-incident Also April 16, 2014 is March 17 on the lunar calendar. March 17 is when this MV was publicly released in Korea. (The reason why the date below the MV is shown to be March 16 on KZbin is because KZbin uses PST (Pacific Standard Time) to date all videos. When this video was released, it was March 16 in PST but March 17 in Korea.) But even without these and other clues, in light of the fact that the Sewol tragedy was still very fresh on the minds of Koreans when this MV was released, the thematic use of the ship and boat on the open sea and their taking on water and sinking, the depictions of drowning and falling overboard, in tandem with the lyrics and mood of the song -- which is literally about mourning the separation from a loved one and promising to reunite some day -- could hardly have been a coincidence. In fact, practically every Korean who is both familiar with Chilseok and has seen this MV has little doubt that it's about the Sewol Ferry tragedy, and SM has never denied it.

How can you say the song is boring? It's really beautiful. You're too accustomed to hip hop and such, you can't even appreciate a well done slow-beat song. Seriously. And it seems like most of you don't get the Red Velvet concept... Red is for upbeat songs and Velvet is for slower ones. Red: Happiness Velvet: Be Natural _ Red: Ice Cream Cake Velvet: Automatic _ Red: Dumb Dumb Velvet: One Of These Nights You get it now? The comebacks are in pair and each pair is divided by the two genres. First you'll get the hyper comeback and then you'll get the relaxing one. Stop saying you're disappointed with SM because the song is too slow for your liking, it's how it is and that's it. Just appreciate their nice vocals and the beautiful song.

ok for real im not even joking, the musical and visual storytelling in this is INSANE. Even without context, it's visually stunning. But when you know the meaning behind it, the symbolism, the tiny details, everything is just overwhelmingly well done altogether. The story it tells is so so so big, yet it is done with beautiful simplicity and thought. THIS is musical and visual poetry, in only 4 minutes.

Rest in peace to those students who passed away in that tragedy. I feel incredibly sorry for those students parents who would give anything to bring their children back. I can't imagine anything like that happening to me or a loved one. Even if I didn't know them, I'm quite sure I'm not the only one who would give up things to bring them back

I think I know why the theory of this MV being linked to Sewol has never been confirmed/denied by SM. As you may know, f(x), RV's sunbae in SM, released the song "Red Light" in 2014, which was revealed in December 2015 to have been a criticism of the Sewol incident. Shortly after that, f(x) went on an indefinite and unexplained hiatus. In 2017, the President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, was impeached after 4 years in office. This means that Park was president at the time of the Sewol incident. After Park's impeachment, it was revealed her administration had created a secret blacklist of artists whose artwork commemorated victims of the Sewol disaster. Artists on this list were barred from receiving government acknowledgement and sponsorship. Though it is unclear how far this blacklist stretched, I strongly believe f(x) may have been added to this list, resulting in the group's unexplained hiatus. So, how does this tie in with Red Velvet and One of these Nights? Well, this MV was released prior to the impeachment of Park, and not long after the truth of "Red Light" was revealed. I highly suspect SM intended for the MV to be made to commemorate Sewol (the evidence supporting the theory is credible). However, they may have learned from their mistake with "Red Light", and so the truth about the MV might have never been revealed publicly, for fear that if they did so, Red Velvet could be added to the blacklist as well. Edit: I was thinking while writing this about how RV stated that the lyrics are based off of a Korean folk story. Going back to look at the lyrics again, I was wondering what if the lyrics are meant to contain 2 parallels? One is the Korean folk story of Jiknyeo and Gyeonwoo, the other is a story of two lovers, one of whom died on the Sewol? Either way, we will never forget the souls who went down with the Sewol. 잊지 않겠습니다. 🎗🎗

SM really risked a lot with OOTN, but I guess they thought it was worth the risk because this song, even on its own, is very beautiful. It's message, symbolism and the emotions of the song can truly be felt. I don't understand why this has been their underrated release because this deserves a lot of love and support. It's such a beautiful song, it really is. The lyrics melts my heart. Whenever I shuffle my playlist and this comes on it's really hard to move on to another song, I always end up replaying this for half the day. This deserves much appreciation. This is the best Red Velvet song for me. Truly is a masterpiece. To whoever wrote this, you made my life brighter and to the Red Velvet members who sang this you really gave my life color.

This MV is so surreal. The symbolism, color, and the artistry makes me feel like I'm watching a Wes Anderson movie. One of the best K-Pop MV I've ever seen

@tori66786 жыл бұрын
That theory has never been proven...also if it really was a tribute to the tragedy and victims, why didn't they give the money the made from this to the victims family? It'd be seen as greedy and evil if they made a song for people who died and kept the money all for themselves...
@ihsantriapramanda19736 жыл бұрын
The theory is more on the MV, the song itself is inspired by a Korean folktale. Even if it's never been proven, it's still fun to see how the pieces seem to perfectly fit the theory. Also, who are we to judge them being greedy, we never know what they do behind closed doors. Even if they personally did (or did not) donate to the victims, no need to make it public so every people knows

Im probably wrong but I'll try I think that: Yeri symbolize students who died in this tragedy Seulgi symbolize families of victims Joy symbolize survivors Irene symbolize people who watched this tragedy Wendy symbolize people who refused to believe what's happening and unfortunaly - decided to listen to the captain

What happened? What is the story this song is saying? Idk Korean. Nvm. I know now. The Sewol ferry incident is truly heartbreaking. How can the captain be so selfish and leave first on his own?! If they had just told the students to leave then the death of 300 students wouldn'tve happened.

*English Translation* I just woken up from a dream There’s a sad, lone star in the dark sky once again Goodbye, we said our awkward goodbyes As I turned around and went on my way It felt so far In the same time, just for a minute In the same place, stay for a minute In that short moment, everything stopped for you and me Why didn’t I know that was a miracle? I’ve stopped in that day with the old story I’m going through heartache longer than the times we loved Past the Milky Way, in a faraway place I’m going through our white memories It’s alright if it’s just a dream Let’s meet again One Of These Nights Let’s meet again One Of These Nights I can’t quickly forget Because I’m still in the same place even when the pages of the calendar turns In your eyes, just for a minute In your passing touch, stay for a minute In that short moment, everything stopped for you and me Those times shine for me I’ve stopped in that day with the old story I’m going through heartache longer than the times we loved Past the Milky Way, in a faraway place I’m going through our white memories It’s alright if it’s just a dream Baby One of these days One of these years Waiting is just a little thing for me now I’ve stopped in that day with the old story I’m going through heartache longer than the times we loved Past the Milky Way, in a faraway place I’m going through our white memories It’s alright if it’s just a dream Let’s meet again One Of These Nights Let’s meet again One Of These Nights

This shows how well trained vocally SM groups are. They might not be main vocal material individually, alas Irene, Hyoyeon, etc, but everybody has enough technique that when they sing together it's angelical. Be it EXO, Shinee, F(x), GG, SuJu, RV, they are great in general, they all have that specific "whole group singing together" that virtually every SM group has.

Although 5 years have passed, i can't hold back my tears whenever i watch this video. These students are too young and have a wide future ahead. Disaster occurred due to the lack of responsibility of the captain. Every year in 16/04 i will keep coming back here to be tribute unlucky victims. On behalf of Vietnamese people, I want to send the best wishes to the relatives of the victims and i hope all these students feel happy in paradise. From Vietnam with love

It's so sad, realizing all the symbolism in this video, representing what happened to the Sewol Ferry passengers.. Thank you Red Velvet for capturing a tragic event so beautifully that it can bring peace into the hearts of the victims' families when they see this.

Velvet PR TRUE. It's such a beautiful tribute, I can't commend Red Velvet enough for this.

the song is based on Chilseok, a folktale, not the Sewol Ferry Passengers... SM confirmed it. I don't know about the video alone tho, but it was supposed to be on Chilseok too.
@fgv33206 жыл бұрын
Nubia H. The lyrics are about the folktale Chilseok, SM confirmed it. But I remember nothing was said about the music video? And I still think the video is referencing the Sewol incident.

Velvet PR it does look like it, I was completely fooled at the time this song came out. It even made me cry thinking about it. Well, I’m not sure anyways. I rather believe it’s about the accident, fits perfectly.

This is the song that makes me fall in love with red velvet. Such an underrated song. Their voices harmonized perfectly and the music is beautiful yet haunting. Their aesthetics in the mv are so beautiful and the theory behind the mv is heartbreaking. I will always remember this song as my first song. Red velvet saranghae!!

I don't understand why so many people are disappointed. Were you expecting an upbeat song? Then you clearly don't know how Red Velvet works.. They are a group with dual concepts, they have their 'Red' side which is their fun and happy side with songs like Dumb Dumb and ICC. This is their 'Velvet' side, their soft and classy side where songs like Automatic and Be Natural are included. They came back with their Red side last time, now it's the Velvet side. This is how Red Velvet works and I'm really happy SM has this concept for them, it's unique and we can see different sides of their music. I couldn't be happier with it.
