It's a song about realizing you've been too harsh on yourself and it's time you stop and be the person who will honestly embrace you for who you are, who will hold you closely and love you deeply. Meeting the version of you that you didn't know who exist and telling yourself that you'll never lose 'you' again. Perhaps, it's for everyone who've been struggling to accept themselves wholeheartedly because of their past decisions that hurt them and maybe 'Letter to Myself' could be a reminder for all of us that it's okay, that even if we're lost at some point in life, we're bound to find ourselves again and grow on our own pace.

I think those people on the bus are different voices in her, and also in our head, sometimes self-doubting, sometimes self-defeating, but as long as there is one voice supporting us, although it is just a small voice and seems weak, it can turn out powerful and motivate us to keep on going. And whenever there is a difficulty, all voices have a common goal and work together. In the end they were all back to their house - TY, feeling safe and happy. So just face these voices genuinely, cause no matter how they look like, they make you you.

그니까 저 영국 친구들이 다 태연인 거야.... 내가 누군지도 모를 만큼 내 안에 내가 많던 나 자신, 스스로 자신을 괴롭히고, 자신에게 공을 던지고 자신을 놀리던 사람이 다 자기 자신이었던 거야.. 자기 혐오가 가득하던 나였지만 이젠 버스(자신의 마음)를 고치려 하는 거지. 물론 그 과정이 힘들었지만 계속 노래하며 자기를 사랑하게 된 태연이는 더 이상 외롭지 않은 거야.. 스스로 자길 위로할 줄 알게 되었으니까.. 마지막에 웃으며 사진 찍는 모습에서 이젠 자기를 사랑하게 된 것 같아. 덕분에 나도 위로 받았어..

The way the song slowly unveals the main character's progression - from a self-doubting, uncertain person hurting from suppressing her emotions and thoughts, she learns to embrace this hurt and grows to love and express her inner self more freely... and you can suddenly hear that change - when she 'met the part of me that was hidden' - the exact moment her 'I wrote a letter to myself' line brightened up in the second chorus. It's so much more energetic and loud, confident and self-assertive... She finds strength and clarity within herself, and she promises to never lose it again. And to deliver so much of that message so effectively just through her vocal performance... her artistry is just something else. Taeyeon is one of Kpop's best vocalists for a reason.

Taeyeon really does it once again. Letter To Myself is probably a song that Taeyeon made to comfort her younger self but in a way, somehow, the adult Taeyeon is comforting the younger me in the past too. Knowing what Taeyeon went through during her younger days, hearing this song and seeing the lyrics as well makes this even much more emotional and touching. Thank you Taeyeon for choosing and fighting for this song to be the title track, I love it so much already and I somehow teared up watching this masterpiece. It shall hold a special place in my heart and continue comforting me for many days and years to come 🥹💜

I've been thinking about this issue on and off since the album release. I think I would like to amend my comment here, behind artists there is an army of managers, content creators, editors, song writers, etc. All of these people in the background help bring artists voice to life, and I do not want to undermine their efforts to bring us fans amazing releases by our favorite artists like Taeyeon. It comes down to SM's leadership and decisions on what/who will get prioritized, and that's where the blame should be placed for how the lack of promotions goes.

이런 노래는 오랜만인 것 같아요... I부터 9년 동안 매해 언니의 노래를 들었고 올해도 예외가 아니었다. letter to myself라는 노래도 언니한테 되게 의미 있는 곡이죠? 저한테도 그렇고, 노래를 듣고 뮤직비디오와 가사를 보는 순간 과거의 제 모습이 많이 떠오르는 것 같아요. 이런저런 순간에도 항상 언니의 노래가 함께했다. 언니를 좋아하게 된 건 제 인생에 있어서 굉장히 의미 있는 일이고,, 예나 지금이나 미래나 음악을 느끼는 순간이나 힘이 납니다. 이번 뮤직비디오는 런던에서 촬영하면서 익숙한 거리를 보면서 마음이 더 특별하고 강렬해진 것 같아요ㅠㅠ...아무튼 사랑해요!! 앞으로도 행복하게 노래하세요..

I think an English version of this is a perfect song to expose taeyeon to other people. This sound is so beyond kpop for some reason I can’t yet explain but i can think of a lot of people that would like this but are not just aware of it because they’re not in the kpop sphere.

@@ran2123 I think English version is unnecessary. If the global folks should get a taste of Kpop music, let them taste it in its authentic way; with majority Korean lyrics. Kpop songs typically already have some English words and phrases in them anyway, which is enough. I've seen cases where Kpop idols/companies are so desperate to make English versions of their hit songs or even produce the original version entirely in English, and it only made it sound weird and off, it doesn't have the typical Kpop allure to it anymore. Plus, it's feeding into the old, racist narrative that "English songs are superior" and "A song has to be in English to reach global listeners", which is so false, backwards and discriminative. I think the mindset should be "Let's make Kpop music mainstream to the global public" instead of "Let's slowly erase the K from Kpop so that it becomes mainstream to the global public".

i don’t understand korean, so I can’t speak it or truly understand this song. i’m very thankful for the translated ENG lyrics, because it helps me understand a bit more. many of taeyeon’s songs touch my heart, and this one does the same. it makes me want to cry, and reading the lyrics, while hearing taeyeon’s voice just hits me in the feels. thank you taeyeon..
